It’s hard to believe that VeggieTales hasn’t tackled the classic Noah’s ark story until now. They finally have in the new release Noah’s Ark, where carrots meet cubits. Pa Grape joins a long line of other actors who have portrayed the great ark builder.

The Veggie version of the story has Noah’s son Shem and his wife Sadie returning home after their honeymoon. Shem is voice by Wayne Brady of Let’s Make a Deal and Whose Line Is It Anyway, while Sadie is voice by Christian music artist Jaci Velasquez.

Shem is unsure about his father’s plan to build a huge ark for the coming storm. Shem questions if what Noah calls faith in God is actually some form of a breakdown. But when the animals start showing up two-by-two and the rains come, Shem begins to rethink the whole ark thing.

Eventually Shem decides to help his father like his brothers Ham and Japheth do, and is placed in charge of the birds. It is the birds, of course, who will bring the sign to Noah and his family of dry land. He begins to understand that what he thought was craziness, was in fact determination on Noah’s part to follow God’s call to perserve humanity.

The movie is another good one for VeggieTales. It is at its best silly, but carrying a message of trusting in God. The animation is outstanding. I’m glad they waited to make the Noah’s ark story with the technology they have now.

Noah’s Ark is complete with a brand-new “Silly Songs with Larry” segment, where Larry, in safari gear, goes on a quest for a gigantic, golden egg . . . . during an Easter Egg hunt.
