Book Review: Little Meerkat’s Big Panic

cover78603-mediumLittle Meerkat’s Big Panic: A Story about Learning New Ways to Feel Calm, Jane Evans, Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2016.

In this little book, Evans explores the feelings of Little Meerkat when it his turn to keep watch. Little Meerkat falls asleep while doing this very important job. When he wakes up, he doesn’t see any of his friends – the friends he was suppose to look out for.

Little Meerkat goes into a big panic!

But it is the help of Small Elephant and Mini Monkey that Little Meerkat calms down.

This may not be a suitable book for a classroom setting. However, it is a great book for children ages two to six who may be experiencing anxiety or moments of panic. Throughout the book, are questions for the adult to ask the child so that the child may relate to Little Meerkat. It would make a great tool to have a conversation with a child about their anxiety.

As blogger Katie at Katie Reviews Books suggest, this would be a great book for a school counselor to have on hand.  I would also recommend a Christian Educator at a church to have on hand for families.

The book also provides an “Information for Adults,” which is a helpful section to help parents explain anxiety to young children. It also provides helpful information about how the brain works as it relates to anxiety.

This book is scheduled to be released March 2016. Click the image below to purchase your own copy.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital review copy.
