Noah was a Hipster

A few weeks ago in youth group, we took a look at the Noah narrative in Genesis.  During our conversations, the students became to think of Noah as a hipster.

Urban Dictionary identifies a hipster as someone who possesses independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive, creativity, intelligence, and witty banner.   I’m sure if we did a character study on Noah, we could find evidence of these characteristics.

Noah was called to do something that others saw as illogical and foolish.  The image above shows neighbors poking fun at Noah as he builds the ark.  Despite the mocking and hateful speech being thrown at him, Noah continued to go against the culture, he swam against the tide, and he thought for himself.    In the midst of a troubling time, where the “cool thing” had little to do with God, Noah faithfully followed  his call to build this ark.

What if we all thought for ourselves and didn’t choose actions and words based on what others say or think?  What if we all followed our vocational calls with such courage and faith?  What if we all were hipsters in our own right?

  1. I was inspired by Lecrae’s Rebel album to start a new series on rebels in the Bible for our youth group. Noah will be my first. He certainly was a hipster who was counter-cultural.
